Paediatric OT · ADHD support

Occupational therapy for children with ADHD, at home and at school.

Mobile AHPRA-registered OTs helping children with ADHD build the routines, organisation and self-regulation skills that everyday life demands.

ADHD affects far more than attention. It affects the ability to start and finish tasks, manage a school bag, regulate emotions, follow multi-step routines and hold a pencil long enough to write a sentence. Our OTs work with children, parents and teachers to build practical systems and skills around the real barriers, not just the diagnosis.

What OT for children with ADHD actually addresses

ADHD affects executive function, impulse control and the ability to regulate attention and arousal, and all of those things have direct consequences for daily tasks. OT works on the practical side: the specific routines, environments and skills that ADHD creates barriers for at home and school. Your OT does not work on the attention itself. They work on the tasks and systems that break down because of it.

Morning and homework routines

Routines that involve multiple steps, time pressure and transitions are among the hardest daily tasks for children with ADHD. Your OT builds structured, visual morning and homework routines, breaks tasks into the smallest manageable units, and works with parents on the environmental setup (bags packed the night before, one task at a time on the bench) that reduces reliance on working memory.

Organisation and task initiation

Getting started on a task is often harder than finishing it for children with ADHD. Your OT assesses where task initiation breaks down (distraction, overwhelm, not knowing the first step) and builds systems: checklists, visual prompts, clear workspaces and consistent cues that make starting easier, at home and in the classroom.

Handwriting and fine motor skills

Handwriting is a sustained, multi-demand task that taxes attention, impulse control, fine motor control and frustration tolerance simultaneously. Children with ADHD often disengage or produce rushed, illegible work under these demands. Your OT assesses all contributing factors and builds a practical plan that addresses grip, posture, letter formation and pacing as an integrated programme.

Sensory regulation and arousal management

Many children with ADHD have significant sensory processing differences that contribute to restlessness, emotional dysregulation and difficulty settling to tasks. Your OT identifies your child's sensory profile, builds a targeted sensory diet (movement breaks, proprioceptive input, calming strategies) and structures these into the school day and home routine in ways teachers can consistently support.

Classroom participation and reasonable adjustments

Your OT assesses how ADHD specifically affects your child's classroom participation: seating position, desk organisation, response to noise and visual complexity, ability to copy from the board, and tolerance for sustained seated work. Written recommendations for teachers include specific, practical adjustments that reduce barriers without singling your child out.

Emotional regulation and frustration tolerance

Emotional dysregulation in children with ADHD is not just a behavioural issue: it often reflects difficulty with impulse control and interoception (reading internal body signals). Your OT works on building your child's awareness of their own regulation state and introduces specific strategies for managing frustration during demanding tasks, both at school and at home.

Questions & answers

OT for children with ADHD: the common questions

Can't see your question? Call us and we'll answer it directly.

What does an OT actually do for a child with ADHD?

OT for children with ADHD focuses on the functional skills that ADHD makes harder: building morning and homework routines, developing organisation systems for school, working on handwriting or fine motor skills (often affected by low frustration tolerance), supporting sensory regulation, and coaching parents on how to structure the environment at home. We do not treat ADHD. We support the functional goals that ADHD creates barriers for.

Does my child need an ADHD diagnosis before starting OT?

No. You can self-refer. OT is appropriate if daily function at home or school is being affected, regardless of whether a formal diagnosis has been made. If a diagnosis is in progress, OT can run in parallel. If an NDIS plan is the goal, the diagnosis will usually be needed for eligibility, and our OTs can discuss that pathway with you.

Is OT different from behavioural therapy or medication for ADHD?

Yes. OT, behavioural therapy and medication each serve different roles and often work well together. OT focuses on building functional skills and modifying environments and routines to reduce barriers. It is practical and hands-on, delivered where the child actually lives and learns. Your OT will work alongside other supports in your child's team, not instead of them.

Will the OT work with my child's school?

Yes, with your consent. Teacher input is valuable in understanding how ADHD affects school participation, and classroom strategies from the OT can make a real difference. We can visit the school, provide written recommendations, and support conversations with teachers about reasonable adjustments.

My child has ADHD and also struggles with handwriting. Can OT help with both?

Absolutely. Handwriting difficulty is common in children with ADHD because it involves sustained attention, impulse control, fine motor control and frustration tolerance all at once. Our OTs assess all the contributing factors and build a plan that addresses them together rather than in isolation.

Does NDIS fund OT for children with ADHD?

Yes. Children with ADHD who have an NDIS plan can access OT under the Improved Daily Living (Capacity Building) budget. We work with self-managed and plan-managed participants. If your child has an ADHD diagnosis and does not yet have an NDIS plan, contact us and we can discuss whether they may be eligible and how to get started.

How much does ADHD OT cost, and are there any rebates?

For NDIS participants we bill within the current NDIS Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits. Private clients receive a written quote before sessions begin. There is no standard Medicare rebate for OT, though some private health extras policies include OT. We will always confirm fees in writing before any visit is booked.
