Paediatric OT · Autism support

Occupational therapy for autistic children. At home, at school, wherever the goal is.

AHPRA-registered mobile OTs working with autistic children and their families on daily living, sensory regulation and school participation.

OT does not treat autism. What it does is support autistic children with the functional skills that make everyday life easier: getting dressed, managing sensory overwhelm, building classroom routines, or developing the fine motor and self-care skills they need for independence. Our OTs work with the whole team around the child and build goals alongside families, not ahead of them.

Paediatric OT · Autism support

What OT support for autistic children involves

OT does not support autism as a condition. It supports autistic children with the specific functional skills that autism can make harder in everyday life. The goals are set by families and children, not by a checklist of deficits. Every autistic child has a different profile, and every OT plan reflects that: what matters most for your child in their home, their school, their routines.

Sensory regulation and profiling

Sensory differences are present in the majority of autistic children and affect how they function across every environment. Your OT builds a detailed sensory profile, identifies the specific inputs that cause overload or drive seeking behaviour, and develops regulation strategies and environmental modifications for home and school, not just for the OT room.

Daily living routines and independence

Dressing, grooming, mealtimes and personal hygiene are areas where many autistic children benefit from OT support. Your OT assesses which components of a task are creating difficulty (sensory, sequencing, motor or transition-related) and builds step-by-step task breakdowns, visual supports and consistent practice routines that work within how your child learns.

Fine motor and school skills

Pencil grip, scissors, handwriting and classroom tasks like gluing and cutting often require direct OT work for autistic children. Your OT assesses hand function and visual-motor skills, builds a targeted programme, and coordinates with the school to ensure classroom activities are structured in a way that supports your child's participation.

Transitions and routine changes

Transitions between activities, environments or people are often the most dysregulating part of an autistic child's day. Your OT identifies the specific transition points causing difficulty and builds supports: visual schedules, transition objects, first-then boards and advance warning strategies that reduce the unpredictability that drives distress.

Play and social participation

Play is how children develop skills and connect with others. For autistic children, structured play and peer interaction can present specific challenges. Your OT supports your child's play skills in ways that build on their interests and strengths, works on the functional components of peer interaction, and provides teachers and parents with strategies that help without forcing a particular social style.

Parent and teacher coaching

The most effective OT support for autistic children extends beyond the OT session into how parents, teachers and support workers structure the environment and respond to behaviour. Your OT provides coaching on sensory strategies, communication supports, routine design and how to interpret and respond to behaviour in ways that build trust and reduce distress across the whole day.

Questions & answers

OT for autistic children: the common questions

Can't see your question? Call us and we'll answer it directly.

What does an OT actually do for an autistic child?

OT focuses on functional skills: the things your child needs to do at home, at school and in the community. For autistic children this might include supporting sensory regulation (managing overwhelm or sensory-seeking behaviour), building fine motor skills for writing and self-care, developing daily living routines (dressing, grooming, mealtimes), supporting school participation, and coaching parents and teachers on practical strategies. The goals are set with you, not for you.

Does my child need an autism diagnosis before accessing OT?

No. You can self-refer and OT assessment can begin before or during a diagnostic process. That said, an autism diagnosis can open the door to an NDIS plan, which funds OT. If your child is on the path to diagnosis, our OTs can work with you on practical goals in the meantime and contribute to the diagnostic picture where appropriate.

Is NDIS funding available for OT for autistic children?

Yes. Autistic children with an NDIS plan can access OT under the Improved Daily Living (Capacity Building) budget. We work with self-managed and plan-managed NDIS participants. If your child has an autism diagnosis and does not yet have an NDIS plan, they are likely eligible: our team can walk you through that process.

What approach do your OTs take with autistic children?

Our OTs use a strengths-based, child-led approach. We take time to understand what matters to your child, what their sensory profile looks like, and what barriers actually affect daily life. Sessions are structured around the child's interests and capacity on the day. We involve parents and carers throughout so strategies are consistent across home and school.

Will the OT work with my child's school or support team?

Yes, where consent is given. Coordinating with teachers, support workers and other therapists (speech pathology, psychology) is a core part of how our OTs work. We can attend school meetings, provide written recommendations for classrooms, and contribute to NDIS plan reviews.

My autistic child finds new people very hard. How do you handle the first session?

We take it at your child's pace. The first visit is low-pressure: often it involves the OT observing and playing alongside your child rather than jumping straight into formal assessment. Parents are always present if that helps. We discuss what works for your child before the first visit so the OT arrives prepared.

How much does OT for an autistic child cost?

For NDIS participants we bill within the current NDIS Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits. Private clients receive a clear written quote before any sessions are booked. Travel time and non-face-to-face time are always disclosed upfront. No surprises at invoice time.
