Mobility equipment assessment prescribed by an OT.
An AHPRA-registered OT assesses your mobility and prescribes the right equipment, so what you get actually works for you at home.
The right walking frame, wheelchair or shower chair can make an enormous difference to someone's independence and safety. The wrong one can create new risks or just gather dust in the hallway. Our mobile OTs conduct mobility and equipment assessments at home, where we can see how you actually move through your space, and prescribe equipment matched to your function, your home layout and your funding. For Home Care Package clients, DVA veterans and CHSP recipients, we handle the prescription and liaise with suppliers to organise delivery and review.

Why equipment prescription at home gives you a better outcome
Mobility equipment prescribed in a clinic and equipment prescribed in someone's actual home are often two different things. Your OT needs to see the doorway widths, the carpet type, the front steps and the bathroom layout to prescribe something that will actually work day to day. This is what an in-home mobility equipment assessment covers, and why it matters more than buying something off the shelf or online.
Functional mobility assessment
Before any equipment is prescribed, your OT assesses how the person moves: their walking pattern, balance, strength, transfer technique (getting in and out of chairs, on and off the bed, into the shower), endurance over different distances and surfaces. This functional picture is what drives the prescription. The same clinical need can call for different equipment depending on how the person moves and what their home demands of them.
Walking aids and frames
Standard frames, wheeled frames, four-wheeled rollators, walking sticks and quad sticks all have different indications. The wrong device at the wrong height, with the wrong wheel or braking configuration for the person's home surfaces, can increase rather than reduce risk. Your OT prescribes the specific type, model and measurements, and adjusts the device at the visit to confirm it's set up correctly for the person.
Bathroom and shower equipment
Shower stools, shower chairs with arms and back, shower commodes, freestanding toilet frames, raised toilet seats and transfer boards all require matching to the person's transfer technique and the specific bathroom layout. Your OT measures the relevant space, observes the person's bathroom transfers and prescribes equipment that works with the existing fixtures, or flags whether a modification is also needed.
Wheelchair and seating assessment
Manual wheelchair prescription involves assessing the person's propulsion capacity, upper limb strength, sitting balance, the home floor surfaces and doorway clearances, and their daily routine outside the home. For powered wheelchairs or complex seating needs, a specialist AT assessment may be required. Your OT assesses the full picture and either provides the prescription directly or refers to a specialist AT assessor where the complexity warrants it.
Funding pathway and prescription report
For HCP, CHSP and DVA clients, an OT prescription report is required before the funding body will approve equipment purchase or hire. Your OT provides a written report documenting the clinical rationale, the specific item and specifications, and the expected functional outcome. This is submitted to your home care provider or DVA case manager. For private clients, the report can be used with any supplier.
Equipment trial, delivery and review
Where possible, your OT arranges a trial of the prescribed equipment before purchase is finalised. After delivery, a review is scheduled to confirm the device is set up correctly and the person is using it safely. Equipment that sits in the hallway because it doesn't feel right is a common and avoidable outcome. The review visit catches issues early and arranges adjustments or a different model through the supplier and funding body.
How it works
Getting started with a mobile OT
Whether NDIS, aged care, DVA or private, the admin can feel complicated. We handle the paperwork and explain the funding options in plain English so you can focus on the person, not the process.

Transparent pricing
No surprises on your invoice
We can't list fixed prices publicly. What you pay depends on your funding stream, the service, and your location. But every Astrad client gets the same three things, in writing, before any visit is booked.
Every client gets a clear written quote setting out session rates, expected travel time and any reports, before we schedule a single visit.
Within NDIS price limits
For NDIS participants we bill within the limits set out in the current NDIS Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits. No surprises at invoice time.
Travel disclosed up front
Travel and non-face-to-face time are always quoted in writing, at the rates allowed for your funding stream. What you see is what you pay.

Why do I need an OT to prescribe a walking frame? Can't I just buy one?
You can buy one privately, but an OT assessment ensures the device is the right type, at the right height, with the right features for your specific gait and home environment. The wrong frame (wrong height, wrong wheel configuration, no brakes on a slope) can actually increase falls risk. For funded clients (HCP, DVA, CHSP), an OT prescription is also required before the funding body will approve the purchase.
What kinds of mobility equipment can an OT prescribe?
Walking frames (standard, wheeled, four-wheeled with brakes and seat), walking sticks and crutches, rollators, manual and powered wheelchairs, shower commodes, shower chairs and stools, transfer boards, bed rails and grab handles, rise-recliner chairs, pressure care mattresses, hoists and transfer belts. Our OTs assess the full picture of what someone needs and prescribe accordingly.
Does a Home Care Package cover mobility equipment?
Yes. Equipment purchase or hire is a standard use of HCP funds at all levels (1-4), within the package budget. Your home care provider manages the funding and organises the supplier. Our OT provides the prescription report, which is required by most HCP providers before they'll approve equipment spend. For large or complex equipment (powered wheelchairs, ceiling hoists), HCP Level 3 or 4 is usually needed.
Can DVA pay for my mobility aids?
DVA Gold Card holders can access a wide range of mobility aids at no cost, including walking frames, wheelchairs and shower equipment. The process usually starts with a GP or specialist referral, followed by an OT assessment if the item requires prescription. White Card holders may have access to some aids depending on their accepted conditions. We're experienced in DVA pathways and can advise on the process.
What happens at a mobility equipment assessment?
Our OT visits your home and watches how you move: walking on different surfaces, getting on and off chairs and the bed, navigating the bathroom, managing the front steps. We assess strength, balance, coordination and endurance in the context of your actual environment. From this, we determine what equipment (if any) is needed, prescribe the right item and specifications, and either provide a report for your funding body or liaise directly with a supplier for fitting.
Can you assess for a wheelchair at home?
Yes. For manual wheelchairs, a home assessment is often the best starting point, as we can assess the client's functional mobility, measure doorway widths and determine what features are needed for the home layout. For powered wheelchairs, a more detailed AT assessment may be required, including a trial of the chair. We can carry this out or refer to a specialist AT assessor if the complexity warrants it.
What if the equipment doesn't suit after it arrives?
A review is a standard part of the OT equipment service. After delivery, we schedule a follow-up (in person or by phone, depending on complexity) to confirm the equipment is set up correctly and the person is using it safely and comfortably. If adjustments or a different model is needed, we work with the supplier and funding body to arrange it. For funded clients, this review is included in the scope of the OT service.
