Rebuilding daily function after injury, at home

Post-injury OT rehabilitation is practical, goal-directed work done in the places where daily function actually matters. Our mobile OTs visit you at home, in the community and at your workplace to work on the specific tasks affected by your injury. We coordinate with your treating team and write the progress reports your insurer requires, so the rehabilitation stays on track from discharge through to return to full function.

Initial functional assessment

Your OT starts with a structured assessment of how the injury has affected your ability to perform daily tasks, self-care, home management and work. This establishes your current baseline, identifies priority goals and produces the initial report your insurer or treating team needs. The assessment happens in your home or workplace, where functional limitations are most visible.

Daily living retraining

After a serious injury, the basics can become difficult: getting dressed, showering, preparing meals, managing the home. Your OT works through these tasks with you in your actual environment, retraining skills, breaking down steps, and identifying what can be modified or adapted to get you back to independence as efficiently as possible.

Home and environment modifications

Some injuries require changes to the home before safe return is possible. Your OT assesses your home for hazards and accessibility barriers, recommends specific modifications such as grab rails, ramps, threshold changes or bathroom adaptations, and writes the supporting report for NDIS, workers comp or other funding. Equipment recommendations are specific and costed.

Graded work capacity programme

Where return to work is a goal, your OT builds a graded programme that progressively increases the tasks and hours you can manage, aligned with your recovery and any medical restrictions. The programme is reviewed at set intervals, with updated capacity reports for the insurer at each stage. Workplace visits are included when needed.

Assistive technology and equipment

The right equipment at the right time in recovery can make a significant difference to what you can do independently. Your OT assesses and trials equipment options with you, writes the AT report, and coordinates supply and funding. Common examples include mobility aids, upper limb supports, adaptive kitchen tools and bathroom equipment.

Progress reporting and insurer coordination

Workers comp, CTP and DVA claims require regular progress documentation. Your OT writes the reports in the format each insurer requires, at the intervals they specify. We communicate directly with your case manager, rehabilitation provider and treating team so the reporting stays aligned and you're not left managing competing requests from multiple parties.

Post-injury OT rehabilitation is funded through workers compensation (WorkCover QLD, iCare NSW, WorkSafe Vic), CTP insurance for motor accident injuries, DVA for eligible veterans, and NDIS for participants where the injury has produced permanent functional disability. Private health insurance may also contribute.

How it works

Getting started with a mobile OT

Whether NDIS, aged care, DVA or private, the admin can feel complicated. We handle the paperwork and explain the funding options in plain English so you can focus on the person, not the process.

Questions & answers

Post-injury OT rehabilitation: common questions

Can't see your question? Call us and we'll answer it directly.

What does an OT do in post-injury rehabilitation?

An OT focuses on the functional impact of your injury: what daily tasks, work duties and activities you can and cannot do, and what needs to change to support your recovery goals. This might involve retraining daily living skills, recommending equipment or home adaptations, grading tasks over time, coordinating with your employer on modified duties, or preparing reports for your insurer or treating team.

When should I see an OT after an injury?

As soon as your treating team recommends it. Early OT involvement can identify functional limitations, prevent secondary complications from deconditioning or poor technique, and set clear goals for rehabilitation. If you're post-hospital discharge, your rehabilitation coordinator or GP can refer you. You can also contact us directly.

Do you visit me at home or do I come to a clinic?

We come to you. Our OTs visit you at home, at your workplace, or wherever the rehabilitation is most relevant. In-home sessions are particularly effective for daily living goals, because we can see exactly what's getting in the way and practise skills in the actual environment you need them in.

What funding covers post-injury OT rehabilitation?

Workers compensation (WorkCover QLD, iCare NSW, WorkSafe Vic) covers OT rehabilitation for work-related injuries subject to insurer approval. CTP insurance covers OT for motor accident injuries. DVA covers eligible veterans and their dependants. NDIS (self- and plan-managed) can fund rehabilitation where it relates to your disability goals. Private health insurance may also contribute, depending on your fund and cover level.

How long does post-injury OT rehabilitation take?

This depends on the nature and severity of the injury, your goals and the funding available. Some clients need a short series of sessions focused on one area, such as returning to a specific job task. Others have longer rehabilitation programmes covering multiple functional domains. Your OT will set out a proposed schedule and review it with you as you progress.

What is a functional capacity assessment and do I need one?

A functional capacity assessment (FCA) is a detailed evaluation of your physical and cognitive ability to perform work and daily tasks. It is often required by insurers at various points in a workers compensation or CTP claim to establish what level of work you can safely perform. Not everyone needs a formal FCA, but if your insurer has requested one, or if you're preparing to return to work, it's a key document in the process.

Can an OT help if my injury also affects my mental health?

Yes. Injuries often affect both physical function and wellbeing. Our OTs can address the functional impact of anxiety, depression or adjustment difficulties that arise after injury, such as difficulty with motivation, routine, sleep or social participation. Where a more intensive mental health focus is needed, we can work alongside a psychologist as part of your treating team.
