Mental health OT for adults, at home and in the community.

AHPRA-registered OTs supporting the functional impact of mental health on daily routines, work, self-care and community participation.

Mental health conditions can affect how we manage daily routines, care for ourselves, engage with work, maintain relationships and participate in the community. Our mobile OTs work with adults to support the functional skills affected by mental health challenges, visiting you at home or in the community settings where those skills are actually needed. We take a practical, person-centred approach, and work alongside your psychiatrist, psychologist and GP.

Mental health OT · What it actually involves

Practical support, where life actually happens

Mental health OT is a distinct discipline. We don't treat the condition itself, that's the role of your psychiatrist, psychologist or GP. Our focus is on the everyday functional impact of mental health: the routines that fall apart, the energy that isn't there, the work or study you've pulled back from, the basic self-care that got hard. Our OTs work with you in the environments where those things actually happen, and we build plans that hold up on harder days, not just the good ones.

Routines that anchor the day

When motivation is low or energy is inconsistent, daily routines become fragile. Your OT helps rebuild routines that hold up in better and harder weeks, so the essentials get done without willpower being the only thing keeping them going.

Pacing and energy management

Depression, anxiety, PTSD and many mental health conditions come with fatigue that doesn't respond to rest in the usual way. Your OT introduces pacing strategies, activity scheduling and energy-mapping so the important things get done when you have capacity.

Return to work, study or community

OT is one of the few disciplines focused specifically on participation. Whether that's returning to work after a breakdown, restarting study, or reconnecting with social and community activities, your OT assesses what's getting in the way and builds a graded plan.

Sensory regulation strategies

Sensory overwhelm plays a real role in anxiety, PTSD and autistic mental health presentations. Your OT can identify sensory triggers in your environment and build regulation strategies (movement, pressure, rhythm, quiet spaces) that work where you live, not just in a clinic.

The mechanics of self-care

When mental health drops, the basics go first: eating regularly, showering, sleep hygiene, household management, keeping on top of admin. Your OT works through the mechanics without judgement, breaking tasks down to what's achievable right now.

Coordinated with your treating team

OT is one part of a mental health support network. With your consent, we liaise with your psychiatrist, psychologist, GP and case manager so you're not repeating your story, your supports stay aligned, and everyone is working on the same goals.

If you're in crisis or need urgent support, please call Lifeline on 13 11 14 or 000. OT supports the longer functional work that sits alongside acute mental health care, not in place of it.

How it works

Getting started with a mobile OT

Whether NDIS, aged care, DVA or private, the admin can feel complicated. We handle the paperwork and explain the funding options in plain English so you can focus on the person, not the process.

Questions & answers

Mental health OT: common questions

Can't see your question? Call us and we'll answer it directly.

What does an OT do for mental health?

OT for mental health focuses on the functional impact of the condition, specifically how it affects daily activities, self-care, work, study, relationships and community participation. Our OTs do not treat the mental health condition itself, but they work on supporting the skills and structures that mental health challenges can erode: daily routines, sleep habits, meal preparation, personal hygiene, time management, social engagement and work readiness.

How is OT different from seeing a psychologist or psychiatrist?

Psychologists and psychiatrists work on the mental health condition through therapy or medication management. OTs work on the functional consequences of that condition in everyday life. The roles are complementary and our OTs often work alongside your existing mental health team rather than replacing them.

Do you work with people who have anxiety, depression or trauma?

Yes. Our OTs work with adults managing the functional impact of a range of conditions including anxiety disorders, depression, PTSD, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia spectrum conditions and personality disorders. Our role is functional, not diagnostic, and we work within the scope of AHPRA-registered OT practice.

Why does the OT come to my home rather than a clinic?

For mental health OT, in-home visits are often clinically more effective and practically more accessible. For someone managing depression or severe anxiety, getting to a clinic can itself be a major barrier. Working with you at home means we can assess and support the real environment where daily functioning is either working or breaking down.

What funding covers mental health OT?

NDIS (self- and plan-managed) is available for participants whose mental health condition constitutes a permanent disability and has functional impacts. DVA covers eligible veterans, including those with PTSD and other service-related mental health conditions. Private health insurance (extras cover) may contribute depending on your fund. Medicare does not routinely cover OT sessions, but a GP-initiated Chronic Disease Management plan may provide a limited Medicare contribution for eligible clients.

Do I need a referral from my GP or psychiatrist?

You do not need a referral to contact us directly. However, if you are accessing Medicare-subsidised sessions via a Chronic Disease Management plan, your GP will need to prepare the plan and referral. For NDIS, no referral is needed. We'll confirm the right pathway for your situation when you call.

What does a mental health OT session look like?

Sessions vary depending on your goals but might include: developing or restoring a daily routine, working on self-care tasks, practising strategies for managing energy or motivation, supporting re-engagement with work or study, or gradual exposure to community activities. Sessions are practical and goal-directed. Your OT will discuss what areas matter most to you and build a plan from there.
