Paediatric OT · School readiness

School readiness OT for children starting Prep or Foundation Year.

Mobile AHPRA-registered OTs helping children build the skills they need to start school with confidence.

Starting school involves much more than knowing the alphabet. Children need to sit and attend, manage a pencil, follow multi-step instructions, regulate emotions in a busy classroom, and look after their own belongings. Our OTs assess your child's readiness across all of these areas and work with you and your child's preschool or kindergarten to fill the gaps before the big day.

What school readiness OT actually assesses and builds

School readiness is not one skill, it is a cluster of physical, sensory, social and self-management skills that children need to function in a classroom. An OT assessment looks across all of them, identifies where the gaps are and works with families and early childhood educators to fill those gaps before school starts, or during the early years if concerns emerge once your child is already there.

Fine motor and pre-writing foundations

Before a child can write letters, they need adequate grip strength, in-hand manipulation skills and visual-motor integration. Your OT assesses pencil grip, drawing ability, scissor use and copying skills against age norms, then builds targeted activities that develop these foundations in the months before Prep begins.

Sitting tolerance and sustained attention

Classroom learning requires children to sit at a desk and attend to a task for progressively longer periods. If a child's core stability is insufficient or their sensory system drives them to move constantly, this is very difficult. Your OT identifies whether the challenge is postural, sensory or attentional and builds strategies that help the child participate in structured activities.

Self-care independence at school

School introduces self-care demands that home may not: managing a school bag, opening a lunchbox independently, doing up clothing after the toilet, changing for sport. Your OT assesses these specific tasks, identifies where the difficulty lies (motor, sensory or sequencing) and builds practice into daily routines before and during the transition to school.

Sensory regulation in a busy environment

Classrooms are loud, bright and unpredictable. For children with sensory processing differences, the sensory load of a busy school environment can be overwhelming before the learning even starts. Your OT identifies your child's specific sensory vulnerabilities and develops strategies: scheduled sensory breaks, environmental adjustments and regulation activities the teacher can use.

Following multi-step instructions

Teachers give multi-step verbal instructions constantly. Children who struggle to hold and sequence verbal instructions fall behind quickly, not because of ability but because of processing or working memory differences. Your OT assesses this, works on practical strategies and provides teachers with specific communication adjustments that improve your child's ability to follow classroom directions.

Coordination and gross motor readiness

Balance, body awareness and coordination underpin the physical demands of school: sitting on the floor for mat time, navigating the playground, carrying a bag and managing stairs. Your OT assesses gross motor foundations and, where relevant, coordinates with a physiotherapist to ensure both fine and gross motor aspects of school readiness are covered.

Questions & answers

School readiness OT: the common questions

Can't see your question? Call us and we'll answer it directly.

What does a school readiness OT assessment look at?

Our OT assesses fine motor skills (pencil grip, scissor use, drawing), self-care (dressing, toileting independently, managing a lunchbox), attention and sitting tolerance, sensory regulation in a busy environment, gross motor skills like balance and coordination, and pre-literacy and pre-writing foundations. We also speak with your child's preschool teacher to get the full picture.

When is the best time to book a school readiness OT assessment?

Ideally six to twelve months before your child starts Prep or Foundation Year, so there is time to work on any areas before school begins. That said, it is never too late. Many families come to us once school has started and a teacher has flagged concerns in the first term.

My child is already at school but struggling. Is it still worth seeing an OT?

Yes. The foundational skills that underpin school readiness continue to develop through the early years. If a child is finding the physical, sensory or organisational demands of school difficult in Year 1 or Year 2, OT assessment and support is still appropriate.

Does my child need a developmental delay diagnosis for school readiness OT?

No. Many children who benefit from school readiness OT have no formal diagnosis. You can self-refer directly. If there are concerns about development that may warrant a diagnostic assessment, your OT will discuss appropriate referral pathways with you.

Will the OT visit my child's preschool or school?

Yes, where parents consent and the service agrees. Observing a child in their preschool or classroom setting provides information that a home-only assessment cannot capture. We coordinate with teachers and write recommendations in plain language they can use directly in the classroom.

Does NDIS fund school readiness OT?

Yes. School readiness OT is funded under the Improved Daily Living (Capacity Building) budget for self-managed and plan-managed NDIS participants. If your child does not yet have an NDIS plan and you believe they may be eligible, our OTs can discuss the process with you. Private fees are available with a written quote upfront.

What is the difference between school readiness OT and a speech or developmental assessment?

School readiness OT focuses on the physical and sensory foundations for learning: fine motor, self-care, sensory regulation and visual-motor skills. Speech pathology focuses on language and communication. A developmental paediatrician provides a broader medical assessment and can make diagnoses. These services are complementary, and our OT will recommend other assessments if relevant.

Ready when you are

Prep approaching and not quite sure? Let's take a look together.

A school readiness OT assessment gives you and your child's teacher a clear, practical picture of where things stand. We come to you, at home or at preschool, and give you a written report with specific strategies you can use straight away. No referral needed. A written quote is provided before any sessions are booked.
