What daily living OT actually works on

Daily living OT for adults is focused, practical work done in your home and community. We are not assessing for the sake of a report. We are working with you on the specific tasks that have become difficult or have stopped altogether, in the actual environment where they need to happen. The goal is real independence with the things that matter most to you.

Personal care and self-care retraining

Getting dressed, showering, grooming and managing personal hygiene are often the first daily tasks affected by disability, injury or illness. Your OT works with you on these tasks in your actual bathroom and bedroom, retraining technique, introducing adaptive methods, and identifying equipment that reduces the physical or cognitive demand without reducing your independence.

Meal preparation and kitchen skills

Cooking involves a complex mix of standing tolerance, upper limb function, sequencing and safety awareness. Your OT assesses your kitchen in practice, works on the specific steps that are getting in the way, and recommends any equipment or layout changes that make cooking safer and more achievable. For NDIS participants, AT reports for kitchen equipment are included where needed.

Home management and household tasks

Cleaning, laundry, organising and managing the home environment require sustained physical and cognitive effort. Your OT analyses which tasks are most difficult and why, then develops practical strategies around technique, scheduling and tools. The aim is to keep you managing your home to the standard that matters to you, with the supports or adaptations that make it possible.

Functional capacity assessment for NDIS and funding

A formal assessment of how your disability or condition affects daily task performance is often required for NDIS planning, plan reviews or housing decisions. Your OT uses structured observation and standardised tools to produce a detailed report covering self-care, home management and community participation. The report is written to the standard required by NDIS or the relevant funding body.

Assistive technology assessment and prescription

Where equipment would support your independence with daily tasks, your OT assesses your specific needs, trials suitable options with you, and writes the AT report required to access NDIS or other funding. This might cover shower commodes, dressing aids, adapted cutlery, smart home devices, communication tools or mobility equipment, depending on your goals and circumstances.

Community access and participation

Getting around the community, using public transport, accessing shops, attending appointments and staying socially connected are all part of independent living. Your OT can work with you on these tasks in the real environments where they happen, building skills, confidence and strategies for the specific barriers you face. Transport funding, wayfinding strategies and support structures are all within scope.

NDIS (self- and plan-managed) funds daily living OT under capacity building and daily activities support categories. DVA covers eligible veterans. Private health insurance may contribute depending on your extras cover. Contact us and we will help you work out the right funding pathway before your first session.

How it works

Getting started with a mobile OT

Whether NDIS, aged care, DVA or private, the admin can feel complicated. We handle the paperwork and explain the funding options in plain English so you can focus on the person, not the process.

Questions & answers

Daily living OT for adults: common questions

Can't see your question? Call us and we'll answer it directly.

What counts as daily living skills for an adult OT?

Daily living skills cover everything involved in managing your own life independently. This includes personal care (washing, dressing, grooming), meal preparation and cooking, managing medications, home cleaning and maintenance, managing money and paperwork, using public or private transport, shopping, and accessing community services. OT also covers instrumental activities like phone and technology use, and re-engaging with work, study or social life after a period of reduced function.

Who accesses daily living OT as a working-age adult?

Adults aged 18 to 64 access daily living OT for many reasons: living with a physical or intellectual disability, recovering from an injury or illness, managing a chronic or progressive condition, adjusting after a significant life change, or relearning skills following a period of hospitalisation. NDIS participants, DVA clients and private individuals all access this service.

Why does the OT come to my home instead of a clinic?

Daily living skills are, by definition, home-based and environment-specific. A kitchen assessment done in a clinic is largely irrelevant to how your kitchen is actually set up. Seeing your real home, your actual cupboard layout, the height of your bench, the path from your bedroom to the bathroom, gives us the information we need to make recommendations that will genuinely work for you.

What is the difference between daily living OT and a home assessment?

A home assessment is a one-off evaluation that produces a report, often for home modifications, equipment or NDIS planning. Daily living OT is typically an ongoing programme of therapy sessions aimed at developing or re-developing skills over time. The two often overlap: our OT might start with an assessment that identifies what modifications and equipment are needed, then follow up with sessions to build the skills to use them.

Can an OT help with assistive technology for daily living?

Yes. Where a piece of equipment, device or assistive technology would support your independence, our OT can assess the need, trial options with you, and write the AT report required for NDIS or other funding. This might include shower commodes, dressing aids, adapted cutlery, smart home devices, or communication technology, depending on your goals and circumstances.

What funding covers daily living OT for adults?

NDIS (self- and plan-managed) funds daily living OT under capacity building and daily activities support categories. DVA covers eligible veterans. Private health insurance (extras cover) may contribute depending on your fund. Private clients can also self-fund sessions. We can help you work out which pathway applies to you.

What does a Functional Capacity Assessment cover for daily living?

A functional capacity assessment for daily living examines how your disability or condition currently affects your ability to perform self-care, home management and community participation tasks. It uses structured observation and standardised tools and produces a detailed report that can be used to support NDIS plan reviews, new plans, funding requests, or housing and support decisions.
